Retirement and Active Adult Living
LEISURE ACTIVITIES AND TRAVEL
With such a diverse climate, strategic airports, acres of parkland, excellent entertainment venues and fabulous dining choices in all price ranges, seniors can be as active as they’d like. Seniors can join tours to travel to exotic places or volunteer at a local museum. They can participate in a variety of dance classes, walk the miles of shoreline trails along Lake Michigan or head outside of the city for a scenic drive. The Chicago region truly has something for every senior.

The region also has numerous neighborhood recreation centers, including YMCAs and other offerings with engaging activities and, in many cases, senior fitness programs.

A useful resource from the city of Chicago’s Department of Senior Services Area Agency on Aging are six Regional Senior Centers that offer “a variety programs designed to address the diverse needs and interests of older Chicagoans, from those who are healthy and active, to those who are frail and homebound.” These facilities are run by top-notch staff and provide services in areas including health and fitness, education, social interaction and recreation. The department partners with other nonprofit groups to run 10 satellite senior seniors that reach out even more seniors living in the area. A community favorite, the Golden Diners Program, brings older adults together to enjoy hot healthy meals every day at nearly 70 locations. Along with food, these sites hold other activities, such as health education seminars, motivational speakers, off-site trips and exercise classes that increase endurance, balance, strength and flexibility.

AARP WORKFORCE PROGRAM
If you’re like many recently relocated Chicagoans, you may have moved to the Chicago to retire and relax. Although you’re of retirement age, once you’ve settled into your new life, you may find you’re not really ready to retire.

Recent AARP surveys indicate that in 2012 around one-fifth of U.S. workforce is older than 55. As the U.S. economy struggles to adjust to market volatility, it can be financially beneficial to continue to work after retirement. AARP Illinois is working with local businesses to educate employees on financially preparing for retirement.

The main focus of the foundation is promoting Illinois employers to automatically enroll employees into company 401(k) plans or even 403(b) plans. By taking this initiative, AARP Illinois believes that families will begin discussing the cost of retirement sooner; therefore saving more, spending less, paying of debts and embracing the idea of enrolling in savings plans at work.

While the program hopes to help Illinois retirees in the future, today many seniors must stay working for income or choose to work for the enjoyment of having a job. To assist these seniors, AARP has engaged more than 40 national companies and organizations through the AARP National Employer Team in a collaboration to match workers over 50 with current job openings. Many of these national businesses have a presence in Chicago. A complete listing of this employment group can be found at www.aarp.org/employerteam/.

The AARP Foundation has two programs geared to help over-50 workers. AARP’s Worksearch program is a Web-based system that provides mature workers with the tools they need to assess their job interests and skills, address training gaps and connect to available jobs with local employers that value their experience.

The AARP Foundation also offers the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP), providing job retraining and help re-entering the workforce to over-55 adults with limited incomes. SCSEP helps program enrollees sharpen their job-hunting skills, obtain on-the-job training and find a permanent position.
